Harwood Museum of Art, Public Programs Coordinator, Taos New Mexico

The Harwood Museum of Art of the University of New Mexico, based in Taos seeks a creative, community-centric Public Programs Coordinator to plan and execute programming for multi-generational audiences in support of the museums strategic plan. A successful candidate is a dynamic thinker with experience planning innovative public events and strong attention to detail. Knowledge of museum education practices strongly preferred.

The Public Programs Coordinator is responsible for administering on-site, virtual, and community-based programs including artist programs, lectures, concerts, films, and community engagements that are accessible to all abilities. This position also manages rentals of the Aurthur Bell Auditorium and provides administrative support for all public-facing activities, including overseeing contracts, ticketing, and event management. Working closely with community partners and public audiences, the Public Programs coordinator represents the Harwood Museum of Art and plays a key role in upholding the museums commitment to fostering equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion. This position works in collaboration with the Curator of Education and Public Programs, the Education Coordinator, Multi-Media Services Tech, and the Manager of Community Engagement, Customer Service Associates, and Harwood Volunteers.


About the Harwood Museum of Art

Founded in 1923, the Harwood Museum of Art is the second oldest museum in New Mexico. It has been part of the University of New Mexico (UNM) since 1935 but is located in the longstanding art colony of Taos, New Mexico, and serves the community and its visitors as well as UNM. The Harwood Museum of Art celebrates Taos artistic legacy, cultivates connections through art, and inspires a creative future. The Harwood Museum of Art is an American Alliance of Museums Accredited museum.

Spanning the 19th Century to present, the museums 6,500 object collection documents the communitys rich multicultural heritage and Taos role in the development of seminal American art. The Harwood Museum has nine exhibition galleries, four of which are dedicated to changing exhibitions that reinforce the museums mission. The permanent collection galleries focus on the key art influences relevant to Taos and northern New Mexico, featuring Hispano Traditional arts, Taos Society of Artists, Taos Moderns, and Contemporary. Among its most noteworthy collections are a permanent installation of seven works by Agnes Martin (1912-2004) and Death Shrine by Ken Price (1935-2012). The Harwood is a cultural leader in the community and the state, and the educational programs are developed collaboratively with local schools and the community.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with developing engaging and innovative public programs related to the Harwoods collections, exhibitions, and strategic priorities
  • Coordinates with artists, community partners, and facility renters in the development of presented events; prepares contracts, provides production cost estimates, manages ticketing, and processes invoices
  • Maintains calendar of public events, notifying all corresponding departments of programs; writes program copy and keeps website updated for all events; serves as a primary point of contact for public programs
  • Establishes and maintains timelines, keeps records and files for contracted events, tracks statistics; proofreads all marketing materials, newsletters, and program materials
  • Oversees facility management of the Arthur Bell Auditorium and other programming areas including coordination of custodial services, repairs and maintenance, work orders, program set-up and clean-up
  • Coordinates activities of support staff (Customer Service Associates and Multi-Media Tech), community-partners, and/or volunteers
  • Coordinates hospitality including arranging lodging, transportation/travel, and catering, as needed
  • Provides clerical and organizational support to department including problem solving, project planning, and execution of stated goals and objectives.
  • Prepares support requests for local, state, and regional funding; assists in the preparation of major grant applications
  • Helps to plan and implement events for the Harwood and partners
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A successful candidate will have many of the skills listed below, and the desire and capacity to learn the rest on the job.
  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience in education, public and/or community programming, event management, or related field
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis
  • Commitment to our mission, with skills in facilitating community-centric practices and experience working with audiences from diverse BIPOC communities
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills with strong attention to detail and ability to maintain detailed records
  • Knowledge of special events planning, including managing contracts, ticketing, budgets, facilities, and event support teams
  • Ability to maintain detailed records, gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Strong computer skills, including basic web design; knowledge of basic graphic design a plus
  • Strong desire to work in collaborative teams; Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience developing engaging programs in a museum setting
  • Audio visual and technical experience in theater or similar setting
  • Event planning and coordination experience
  • Graphic design and website experience to support promotion
